The Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland unequivocally condemns the recent media attacks targeting Bro. Richard Nelson, a pillar of his community who has tirelessly worked for the betterment and enhancement of all people, regardless of background. These disgraceful attacks represent yet another shameful example of anti-Protestant hate directed at our community.
Bro. Nelson, a committed and respected member of a reformed Christian organisation, is being singled out purely because of his membership in the Loyal Orange Institution. His dedication to building cross-community relations and promoting mutual understanding deserves to be recognised and celebrated, not vilified.
It is deeply concerning that whenever a member of the Loyal Orange Institution seeks to serve the public through elected office, certain groups feel emboldened to launch personal attacks, targeting not only our members but also their families. This blatant discrimination must not be tolerated in a modern, inclusive Scotland.
We call upon the Scottish media to take responsibility for their often erratic, biased reporting of our Institution. Sensationalist and misleading coverage only serve to fuel division and encourage further anti-Protestant hate across our communities in Scotland.
Furthermore, we urge the Scottish Government and the First Minister to take their responsibilities seriously and to publicly denounce the growing tide of anti-Protestant hatred we are witnessing. Silence on this issue is not neutrality, it is complicity.
The Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland stands firmly with Bro. Richard Nelson. We fully endorse his efforts, his commitment to cross-community work, and his willingness to serve. We wish him every blessing from God as he continues his political campaign and his service to the community.
Andrew Murray
Most Worthy Grand Master Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland
