On Saturday the 10th of May, West Calder Orange and Purple District No. 35 marked a significant milestone, celebrating their 90th Anniversary — coincidentally on the very date the District was first inaugurated in 1935. This special occasion also saw joint celebrations for Stoneyburn Daughters of Ruth LLOL 189 on their 75th Anniversary, and Stoneyburn True Blues LOL 37 marking an impressive 120 years.
The celebrations were held in the village of Stoneyburn, with the Masonic Hall serving as the venue for the shared event. The day began with a warm welcome from the Right Worthy District Master, Bro. Bill Menzies, followed by prayer and thanksgiving. A short but well-attended parade took place in glorious sunshine, with a large turnout of Sisters and Brothers joining in the celebration.
Following the parade, attendees were treated to a captivating display of historical artifacts, some dating back to the very founding of the Lodges. This was followed by engaging and well-researched talks on the history of each Lodge, accompanied by a striking visual presentation.
Amongst the attendees was the Lodges longest serving member, Bro. John Abbott, who has devoted 68 years’ service to LOL 37.

As part of the commemorations several gifts were exchanged, including ceremonial swords, a new District Bible fall, new Lodge gavels, and ceremonial flags. These were presented before an esteemed gathering that included Senior Depute Grand Master Bro. Eddie McGonnell, Right Worthy County Grand Master Bro. Robert Keeney, and the Most Worthy Grand Mistress Sister Kirsty McAinsh, all of whom delivered inspiring speeches and extended their congratulations to all parties involved. The Ladies’ Lodge was also honoured with commemorative gifts.
Guests then enjoyed a generous and impressive buffet, before concluding the evening with a spirited and well-attended night of celebration — a fitting end to what had been a thoroughly enjoyable and impeccably organised day of fellowship and celebration, a day the members of the Lodges can be proud of and fondly remember.
